{In this game, I carried out a pawn storm and did a speculative material
sacrifice. [%bt=0]} 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 Bxc3+ 5. bxc3 c5 6. Nf3
Nc6 7. Bd3 {Preparing for a potential Greek Gift sacrifice. Forgot that c4
would cause me to lose a tempo.} Nge7 8. O-O c4 {kicking back my bishop before
castling so that the sacrifice on h7 won't follow} 9. Be2 O-O 10. g4 {I
started a pawn storm because the centre was closed, my pieces were pointing
towards the black king, and Black's pieces could not easily access the
kingside.} f5 11. exf6 Rxf6 12. g5 Rf8 13. h4 Nf5 14. Kh1 {clearing g1 for my
rook} Qe8 15. Rg1 Qh5 16. Nh2 {A discovered attack on the queen. I knew that
he could answer with Qxh4, but I thought that by maneuvering my rook along the
g-file, I would be able to either trap the queen or draw by threefold
repetition. According to Fritz, I would not have been able to do either of
those things with best play by Black. Luckily, he didn't answer with Qxh4.
Maybe he, too, thought that it would be risky for him.} Qe8 17. h5 e5 18. g6 h6
{Unfortunately, because he had not previously weakened his king's position by
playing either g7 or h7, he was able to blockade my storm. However, my g-pawn
is now cramping the area around the king.} 19. Ba3 {This move was done to
force the black rook onto f6 so that I could subsequently improve the position
of my knight with tempo.} Rf6 20. Ng4 Re6 21. dxe5 Qd8 22. Bf3 {Threatening to
capture the d-pawn and pin the rook.} Nce7 {adding another protector to the
d-pawn} 23. Bxe7 {Although my bishop had a lot of freedom and kept the king
trapped, it was not really influencing the main area of activity around the
centre and around my king. Therefore, I decided to exchange it in order to
draw the black knight away from its influential position.} Nxe7 24. Qd2 {
threatening to sacrifice on h6 and to bring my rook to the d-file to tripple
my attack on d5} Rb6 25. Nxh6+ {Intending to sacrifice my knight for 2 pawns
(after gxh6, Qxh6) to have a strong attack on the king. [%smsr=1]} Kf8 {
declining the sacrifice and leaving me another pawn up} 26. Qf4+ {Before
playing this move, I made sure that Black could not get out of check with a
meaningful counter-attack on my queen, which would leave me with both my queen
and my knight under attack.} Nf5 {this loses a piece} 27. Nxf5 Bxf5 28. Qxf5+
Kg8 29. Qh3 {avoiding the complications that Qh4+ would cause, and backing up
my h-pawn in preparation for its advance} Rb2 30. h6 {ignoring the threats to
my second rank and continuing with my plan} gxh6 31. Qxh6 Qd7 32. g7 Kf7 33.
Bh5+ {Intending to use my queen and my bishop to force the king onto e6 where
I could skewer to win the queen. If the king goes to g8 instead, then Qh8#.}
Ke7 34. Qg5+ {Continuing with my maneuver to force the king to e6. Qf6 would
have been an instant mate, but I wasn't really looking for mates at this point.
I was just following through with a simple winning plan that I had formulated.}
Ke6 35. Qf6# {I was ready to play Bg4+ to win the queen, but then I noticed
the mate.} 1-0
